"Ah, September! You are the doorway to the season that awakens my soul... but I must confess that I love you only because you are a prelude to my beloved October." — Peggy Toney Horton
It is beginning to feel like Autumn. We relish in all of the seasons, but I particularly enjoy the transitions from one season to the next. The first signs of green in the springtime, the first snow fall. These first days that feel like fall have to be my favorite, though! Some of our summer crops are still holding on (like tomatoes and peppers), but the shares will continue to feel more and more autumnal.
We've planted much of our fields into cover crop - buckwheat is flowering, oats/peas and rye/vetch covers are establishing nicely. We plant the cover crops for many reasons - prevent erosion, feed the soil biology, add nitrogen & organic matter.
We are also beginning/continuing our bulk harvests. Much of our storage cabbage has been harvested, and all of the potatoes have been harvested. Thank goodness we have a good cooler to store all of these beautiful vegetables in. There is much more good eating to come!
