“The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all. It is the healer and restorer and resurrector, by which disease passes into health, age into youth, death into life.”
― Wendell Berry, The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture
We harvested our yellow storage onion & shallots this week. With these alliums, we look for 2/3rds of the plants to have their green tops flopped over. We take this as a sign that they are ready to be harvested. We then lay them out on pallets in our shaded greenhouse where they will dry down to prepare them for long-term storage & distribution. Onions & shallots are a staple crop for us. There is hardly a meal that begins without one or the other!
Our planting out in the field is quickly winding down. Many of our fall crops are planted & growing. The middle picture above is of some of our freshly weeded fall brassicas. The cabbage looks great!
Our meals this time of year are pretty simple. Lots of salads, raw tomatoes on the side, quick sandwiches. The delicious vegetables don't need much preparation, which we are thankful for!
