"...Summer was everything good to eat."
- Harper Lee, To Kill A Mockingbird
We've had a hot, steamy, soggy, muddy week here at Meadowlark. We've received a lot of rain! It's hard weather to work outside in, but the vegetables (for the most part) are very happy about this heat. We're hoping to have the first tomatoes in this week's share! The beets are beautiful and, once again, we have some GORGEOUS celery. We've been enjoying it in salads, stews, and as a snack. Sadly, our first planting of sweet corn was greatly enjoyed by a family of raccoons. Our electric fence is protecting the second planting, and we hope to have it in your shares soon!
We had a lovely potluck last Tuesday with some of our CSA members. We shared some great food and good conversations. It is so wonderful getting to know all of you, and we appreciate you being a part of our lives. We hope to see more of you at August's potluck on Friday, the 19th! We're planning on u-pick herbs, flowers, & tomatoes.
In the photos below, you'll see some of our little CSA members greeting the laying hens, the prolific flower garden (zinnias galore!), and our greenhouse receiving its shade cloth cover. We will plan to cure our onions and winter squash in the warm, shaded greenhouse. Stay tuned for information about a onion harvest work day!
