“Farming is a profession of hope”
― Brian Brett
With the summer CSA beginning this Tuesday and going into the second month of farmers' market season, we are truly into the swing of things. Our weeks are studded with Tuesday CSA harvest, delivery, & farmstand, Friday harvest, & Saturday Farmers' Market. Each week, we watch the weather & plan the rest of our weekly tasks (planting, cultivating, mowing, etc). This week, we'll be weeding everything (pretty much!), trellising tomatoes, cucumbers, & peas, transplanting lettuce & basil, and direct seeding our storage carrots.
We've had a stormy spring. The worst of the storms have missed us. Thankfully, we haven't had any hail. We have had plenty of rainbows. The late frost has pushed back some of our early crops, especially the brassicas (kale, broccoli, cauliflower). Out first summer share won't be as planned, but it'll still be a lovely box. All of the rain and these beautiful temperatures will help our crops take off.
Craig & I are frequent WPR listeners. There were some great programs this weekend. Our friend & fellow farmer, Tony Schultz, was on Garden Talk with Larry Meiller talking about organic gardening & CSA, and The People's Pharmacy interviewed Dr. Maya Shetreat-Klein who wrote The Dirt Cure. Great listens - the links will send you to where you can listen to them online. Enjoy this beautiful week!
