June 19th Weekly News
“And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.”
- F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
Tommorrow is officially the first day of summer. The summer solstice & the longest day of the year... we'll have 15 hours & 20 minutes of sunlight. With working outside & close to the soil, we feel the shift of the season in the vegetables, the birds, the bugs, & our own bodies. We both look forward to the days to follow. (We especially look forward to the earlier bedtime for the chickens!)
We had another busy, beautiful week. The hoophouse is continuing to transform with the 2 different trellissing systems & fast growing plants. We have baby cucumbers & tomatoes already growing! In the field, the summer crops are thriving with the heat. Starting last Friday, we have begun harvesting peas every 2-3 days. A time consuming (& delicious) task, we harvest frequently to ensure that the peas are harvested at their peak.
We had a lovely first CSA potluck on Thursday! Thanks to those who came, & we look forward to seeing you at the farm. For those of you who have signed up for the egg share - your first share will be in this week's box. Let us know what you think!
